Yulia Kovanova: Colony
Sat 14 Mar - Fri 15 May 2020
An Tobar Gallery
14 March to 15 May
Opening Night with Artist's Talk Saturday 14 March, 6-8pm. All welcome.
Yulia Kovanova is a Siberian-born artist and filmmaker based in Scotland. Her work has been presented at international events including Aichi Triennale in Japan, Edinburgh Art Festival, Edinburgh Science Festival, Highlight Arctic, and film festivals worldwide.
Yulia was originally commissioned by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) to create bird sculptures to be placed on a wildlife reserve as decoys, to attract a colony of terns to a safe breeding space.
In her work Colony, the life of the Arctic tern is explored through sculpture, moving image and sound.
The installation will fill the gallery space with suspended mobiles coloured in the distinctive tones of the Arctic tern’s plumage evoking the sense of a whirling flock of birds. Three hundred plus tern beaks appear to have penetrated the gallery wall. These visual elements will be accompanied by a minimal electronic score consisting of sound sculptures created by composer Lars Koens.
Opening times Tuesday to Saturday, 11am - 4pm.
