Embodying the Light is dedicated to Smith’s greatest inspiration, John Coltrane, and marks the fiftieth anniversary of Coltrane’s death and Smith’s own fiftieth birthday year. It includes Coltrane favourites Naima, Dear Lord and Resolution alongside Smith compositions written in homage to his hero.
As listeners to BBC Radio Scotland’s Jazz Nights at the Quay who heard this session will know, Smith’s new group is a cracker. It features one of the UK’s leading young piano talents, Peter Johnstone, a former Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year and winner, with the group Square One, of the 2015 Peter Whittingham Jazz Prize. Bassist Calum Gourlay is a young veteran of gigs with Sheila Jordan, Scott Hamilton and The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, and Sebastiaan de Krom has been the drumming powerhouse behind Herbie Hancock and Jamie Cullum, as well as enjoying an association with Smith in the early 2000s.
This performance is a part of a UK tour that includes a concert at the world famous Ronnie Scott’s jazz club in London.
