Slate Mosaic Workshops with Dugald MacInnes

An Tobar, Tobermory, Isle of Mull.
Gallery Open Evening: Friday 15 June, 6pm – 8pm
(the artist will be giving a talk about his work at 6.30pm)
Workshops: Saturday 16 June – Sunday 17 June 2018.

Dugald MacInnes has exhibited in Scotland, the USA, England, France and Italy and has gained awards in Britain and internationally. He will be returning from France to run these workshops at An Tobar prior to departing to run a summer school in Chicago.

Working principally with slate, MacInnes builds artworks that are a far cry from the conventional practices of mosaic, crafting intricate abstract stone images that have a musical or poetic quality reflecting his passion for geology and archaeology. His work has often focused on a geological context through which his compositions convey a response to the forces that shape our planet, acknowledging the precarious nature of our existence on this planet's surface. The slate that he uses is mainly sourced from disused quarries in Scotland, particularly the Hebridean islands of Seil and Luing, he also makes use of stone and glass from other regions as subtle, coloured focal elements within his compositions.

For his exhibition 'Intrusions', Dugald is returning to his native west of Scotland, the exhibition title refers to some of the actions that take place within igneous rock formation. This has a particular relevance to the Isle of Mull which was itself largely formed by volcanic activity.

About the Workshops:
Participants will be learning slate mosaic techniques using the stone in both its natural state and with regular cut fragments, Italian glass mosaic will also be used to create focal points. For these workshops the aim is to learn to use slate and other materials in an abstract manner, rather than to create conventional pictorial mosaics. Students will be guided through each stage, at the end of the workshops they will take away one or more delightful works of art. All levels of artistic experience will be catered for. There will be an emphasis on composition but a greater emphasis will be put on having fun and enjoyment! Materials and tools are supplied apart from an apron or old shirt. Age limit 12+.
