The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

Directed by Ronald Neame / UK 1969 / 1h 56min / Cert 12A
It's the 50th anniversary of this beloved film, an adaptation of the celebrated novel by Muriel Spark, and subsequent stage play written by Jay Presson Allen. An Oscar-winning Maggie Smith gives one of the defining performances of her career as Jean Brodie, a headstrong, unconventional teacher at a private school in 1930s Edinburgh. Smith captures the haughty grandeur and vulnerability of a complex force of nature, who proves a dangerous influence on the impressionable minds of her beloved 'gerls'. A wonderful cast includes Robert Stephens, Pamela Franklin, Gordon Jackson and Celia Johnson.
