The Mendelssohn on Mull Festival was founded in 1988 to celebrate the visit of the composer to Mull and Staffa in 1829.  The young musician came from Berlin in search of Scottish fable and folklore, and his creative responses can be found in the Scottish Symphony and the Overture, Fingal's Cave.  Over the last 30 years musicians have made the same pilgrimage to enjoy a week of immersion in the masterpieces of string chamber music, surrounded by the natural beauty that drew the composer two centuries ago.

This year's Festival is the first directed by the world-renowned Doric String Quartet.  They have invited nine gifted young musicians to collaborate with them in thrilling repertoire, giving concerts all over the island, and on Iona and in Oban.

The Festival opens on Monday July 2nd with a concert given by the Doric Quartet in Tobermory Parish Church, the last concert on the island is on Friday night at Salen Church, and the final concert given by the Festival Ensemble takes place in St John's Cathedral, Oban, on Saturday July 7th.

On Friday afternoon, July 6th, at Mull Theatre the Mull Music Makers give their annual concert - this is our strikingly successful year-long scheme to introduce the children of the island to the violin and general musicianship.

A further innovation this year is our Festival Fringe.  The Calgary String Quartet, formed from participants at last year's Festival, returns to give two concerts over the second weekend and to perform on the Hebridean Princess cruise ship.

We hope you can join us in the first week of July to experience the magic of Mendelssohn on Mull.
