Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 73, Emperor (1811)
Arr. For Piano & String Quintet by V. Lachner
Schubert Quintet in A major, D. 667, The Trout (1819)
This concert is part of the Lorn Live Chamber Music Festival 2018. The festival brings together nationally and internationally renowned musicians to the beauties of Argyll, where they will share a stage for the first time performing celebrated works from the Classical oeuvre.
Beethoven’s final essay in the concerto genre, his ever-popular and titanic ‘Emperor’ Concerto opens the concert, in an arrangement for Piano and String Quintet. This is paired with Schubert’s much-loved ‘Trout’ Quintet. Composed at only 22 years old, this best-known piece of music to be named after a fish gains its appellation from his Lied of the same name, which forms the theme of the work’s fourth movement.
