National Theatre Exchange Update

19 Nov 2018

National Theatre of Scotland #Exchange2018 update featuring Mull Youth Theatre

Last week, from the 2nd-8th July 2018, the five senior Mull Youth Theatre members went on the adventure of a lifetime that they will certainly not forget. In their final hoorah as a young company of 'Theatre Makers of Now' before going their separate ways for university, Mull Youth Theatre senior company spent the week at Eden Court Theatre, Inverness, performing their smash hit 'RESET: Framework & Fragments', challenging themselves in workshops, and learning from nine international young companies all in the same boat as them! Each day consisted of early starts, breakfast discussions, 5 hours of workshops, watching two performances a night and on the final night - a three-hour mega ceilidh session of utter joy!

As director of this super talented and empowering young company, I have to say that Izzy Willis, Flora Thomasson, Vicki Faye Stevens, Zac Finch and Hannah Thorne are not only an utter privilege to work with and to watch perform, they are also a credit to Comar, Mull Youth Theatre and the Isle of Mull. I was thrilled that they threw themselves into every challenge, opportunity and friendship available to them during the Exchange week. I am proud that they have been trailblazers in holding the first ever Mull Pride on the 20th June 2018 which they plan on making an annual event, so you are all invited next year!

Most importantly, this week was enjoyable for the company, and provided them with skills to carry over into everyday life, university and maybe even acting if they plan to continue in this industry.

The work varied from improvisation, taking risks, breath work, spoken word, political interrogation, thinking of home, devising methods, writing, physical theatre, puppetry, and much, much more! We have all been enjoying a well-deserved week-long sleep since returning home!

Thank you to everyone who supported us in this journey: Comar, The National Theatre of Scotland, Andi Stevens, Sarah Rose Graber, Alan Melvin, Martin Low, Calum Hall, Simon Sharkey, Gillian Gourlay, Braw Holidays, Browns, Kate Harvey, and all of our community, the LGBTQ+ community and our families!
